Post-treatment care is critical in order to achieve a good cosmetic result when performing laser tattoo removal. I emphasize to the clients that the final result depends as much upon how well they take care of their treatment site as it does on my ability to properly laser their tattoo. After laser tattoo removal treatments, we apply antibiotic ointment and a dry sterile non-adherent dressing to the treatment area. We also use paper tape to keep the dressing in place. I instruct clients to use ice packs to decrease swelling, increase post treatment comfort, and reduce blistering. They are also reminded to refrain from showering and any strenuous activity for the first 24 hours. Clients are told to expect some crusting and scabbing that could last for 7 to 10 days after the treatment. In addition, blistering is possible after their laser tattoo removal treatment. If these blisters are extremely large we instruct clients not to break the blisters if possible. I encourage the use of Aquaphor ointment while the area heals.
